Paxi Antipaxi Corfu
Paxos Island is located in the southern part of Corfu, 7 km. from the island of Corfu, 8 km. from the mainland coast of Greece and 12 km. from the mainland city of Parga. The capital of Paxos is the picturesque port of Gaios.
The island of Paxos is mentioned by Homer and Plutorch. The first inhabitants of the island were settlers - the Phoenicians, who moved to Paxos from Corfu. In Greek mythology, the island of Paxos is mentioned as the island that Poseidon created for the wife of Aphrodite. Poseidon threw his trident at Kerker in order to break off a small piece. This is how Paxos was created as a holiday island.
The further history of the island of Paxos is closely connected with the history of the island of Corfu. Paxos passed from the Roman rulers to the Venetians, the French and the British. Leaving a trace of every civilization on the island.
One of the terrible scourges that plagued Paxos was piracy. The first data refer to 1538-1540, when the pirate Turgut had a kind of base on the island of Paxos. Tradition says that the treasure of the Knights of Malta, 70,000 ducats, which he stole from the galley of their galley, hid in the vineyards of the island of Antipaxos, which remains unfound to this day. The French physician, botanist, Pierre Belon, who came to inspect the plants of Paxos in 1546, described in his books that pirates captured sailors. In the spring of 1600, John writes about pirates who landed in Paxos, killed the islanders and took girls and children captive.
In 1800 The island's capital, Port Gaios, was established. The historical riches of our island, documents of cultural heritage are stored here. These surviving documents have attracted scholars and historians who are constantly digging up new information about the island of Paxos and shedding light on previously unknown aspects of history.
The municipality of the island allocated the building of the local gymnasium for the storage and maintenance of the historical archive of the island.
The Paxos Historical Museum operates on the island and is located on the back side of the port of Gaios.
In the courtyard of the museum, you can see parts of an old mill, vessels for oil, stone products, etc. The first room exhibits prehistoric tools, classical urns and vessels, Venetian and modern weapons, coins from different eras and tools. In the next hall, the visitor will be transported to the way of life of the ancient era. There is a rich collection of clothes and underwear, a four-hundred-year-old bed, a baby cradle and other women's accessories. The special variety of kitchen utensils is surprising, pointing to the greatness of the past, with various oil lamps, clay dishes, lamps hanging from the ceiling, etc. The museum was founded in 1996 to showcase the conservation of the island's cultural heritage and for the younger generation.
Paxos is located 14 km south of the island of Corfu, 20 km east of the mainland city of Parga. Paxos covers an area of about 19 square kilometers and is one of the most picturesque small islands in the Ionian Sea. Paxos does not have an airport, but the island can only be reached by ferry and, for this reason, has been shielded from the modern tourism industry. Paxos is an island of endless olive groves and Anti Paxos is one big vineyard. The east coast of the island is quite gentle compared to the west coast, which has a steep cliff, with caves, grottoes and rocks. The capital of Paxos is Gaios, a picturesque village built around the port, which is protected by the two small islands of Agios Nikolaos and Panagia. On the north side of Lakka village there is a very charming village of Loggos. Here you will find leisurely locals, with a genuine sense of friendly Greek hospitality at its best.
Origin of the name Paxos
According to Strabo, the name comes from the Phoenician "Paks", from the word "geometric" trapezium, that is, the island has the shape of a trapezoid, as seen from the sea.
According to another version, foreign residents of the Sicilian city of Paxountas were the first settlers of the island, hence the name - Paxos. Metropolitan Athenagoras put forward his version of the name Paxos. From stone slabs mined in antiquity for construction, which were successfully exported to other countries. Hence the name, "Pax" - a plate, "sa" - an island. Finally, according to another version, the name comes from the phrase "paksosas doors" (closed doors), because the port of Gaios is closed by two small islands.
